Rabbit Eater :(

So right now I am living in the country and my cat just loves it. Only problem is that there are more little animals for him to stalk and hunt (good for him though thus is nature). One day though he was throwing something in the air and we all thought it was a mole or something....it was a baby rabbit. Oh sooo sad and then two days ago he caught another one. Now I love my cat and I know that doing stuff like this is in his blood, but why a cute little bunny??? My cat kind of looks like a bunny too!!!!! Anyone elses cat do anything that makes them cringe????

I have five cats, three of them have lived in three states. My two older males were always serious hunters bringing home birds and squirels. We now live in the country and I expected problems, but when we bought the place it came with a peacock. Birdzilla! The cats have had to learn to live with dogs, a horse, goats, chickens and the peacock. They no longer hunt anything but rodants. In fact it is common to see one of my cats sitting there with baby chicks running around.

My point being that maybe if your cat is introduced to multible animals and is shown that you love these other animals it may help. Perhaps is you have a friend that has a pet rabbit you could introduce the cat and rabbit and exchange some of the scent, by alternately petting both cat and rabbit. Most animals can co-exist if you are patient and if the cat gets to know a domestic rabbit he may no longer see the wild rabbit as food.

my cats did all kinda of gross things....
-eat the outsides of mice and leave the guts on the sidewalk
-eat half an animal and leave the ass end laying on the porch all chewed and meaty and the other end still looked like a chipmunk, rabbit or squirrel.
-bring dead or injured animals to me in my bed a lay it on the food on my bed or by my pillow while i was in the damn bed. this included snakes which sucked because sometimes the snakes "played dead"

this was my puffy cat that did all this and she would sneak these animals in with her head tilted down so my dad or mom wouldnt catch that she had something in her mouth.

when my other cat had kittens she brought them a mouse to learn to kill.....they just stared at it and followed it around like they were suppose to be friends while the mommy cat sat there half crazed looking watching it run around.
it was very bizzare to see.

When your cat left you gifts of animals on your bed etc.. she was attempting to take care of you. You feed her so she wants to feed you. Some of the animals may have been alive so you would learn to kill for your self. It sounds awful but it is the way cats train their kittens. She loves you and is only caring for you-now dosen't that make you feel loved!

Yes....in a way it is cute. I am still finding little presents here and there, but I am a big rabbit lover and feel bad for the babies that keep getting batted around like a ball.
I am going to take your advice though and see what he does around a domestic rabbit.....with me petting it while he is there. Cats are so crazy, but the best friends to have.

As one who has drawn more fire on this issue than I care to recount, and resigned to the probability of drawing more yet, I will point out that "little animals for him to stalk and hunt" is only one part of a larger problem. The other part is bigger animals that will try to stalk and hunt your cat. If you keep your cat indoors or in a yard with a mesh topped cat fence, you don't have to worry about coyotes and owls killing and devouring your beloved pet. Something to ponder.

My Aunt's male cat, who weighs about 15 pounds, occasionally catches young Rabbits, and brings them into the house. Once he has them though, he doesn't really know what to do with them, so usually he lets them go and they run back outside!!

I moved out of that house and live in a apartment and my cats are inside cats. Where shihero lives there is no way to keep him inside or caged up. All the cats out there love to run wild in the forest as its in their nature.
I know I will be sad if he ever gets eaten by a bigger animal, but I also like knowing that he is having the time of his life.

I have all kinds of small critters around here. Its nearly impossible to take the hunter out of the cat, but putting a bell on the collar can give the hunted a little advance wanring. My cat has always worn a bell on her collar and she actually like the noise as if its one of her toys. Whenever its time to replace her collar or bell she is upset until she runs off free again with a new collar and a better sounding bell. I don't think she has every quite realized that it is the bell preventing her from catching all those tempting critters...and the regulars don't take her all that seriously.

In addition, a bell helps me to hear her whereever she might be. She is a very talkative cat most of the time, a real conversationalist, and usually comes immediately when I whistle or call....but she has been known to sit patiently in silence waiting to be freed from certain spots by the powerful humaness...who has no idea where she has herself stuck. Go figure. Well, a bell solved that problem.

She dos get tiny field mice now and then...and tries to escape inot the house with them to play...stuffed in her cheeks they are as she tries to bullet past me through the open doorway. The second one ran crazily around the house until I could catch it and release him outdoors. The thrid one I cut her off at the pass on the doorstep one dark night and kitty, mouse, and I ended up doing a crazy high speed hoppy dance all over the front lawn while kitty tried to grab mouse and I tried to grab ANYBODY and to step on anybody in the process. A few minutes later we are still going round and round in chaos and I am thinking wow I hope I didn't smush the poor thing....when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I spot our tiny Mr. Mouse sitting quietly on the corner of the bottom rail of the fence...watching the stange hoppy dance hoping it isn't his day to die....well I'm certainly not going to be the one to tell kitty....opportune time for grabbing a bewildered kitty and taking our leave of the dissapearing mouse.

Kitty has a sensitive stomach due to bad allergies--the bell has helped improve the situation through controlling what she ingests.
